Key Update – October 2024

In July 2024, the City of London’s Planning & Transportation Committee deferred determining the application for the redevelopment of 1 Undershaft, inviting the team to consider comments made at the committee.  These comments particularly focussed on the relationship between the lower parts of the proposed building and St Helen’s Square.

In response, the team have made a number of amendments to the application, whereby:

  1. The proposed new building line of the lower floors has been pushed back 10 metres, to enlarge the amount of public realm around the site, particularly in St Helen’s Square.
  2. A large new public screen will be introduced, fronting onto St Helen’s Square to engage the public with the amenities and cultural activities within the building. The screen can showcase the cultural life of the City as part of its Destination City vision and include live streams of other cultural settings sporting events and public art.
  3. Our landscape designers have introduced a new moss garden of shade tolerant plants for the north-west part of the site, proposed to be named Undershaft Square, and an intensified grove of trees incorporating planting beds to St Helen’s Square, creating extensive new urban greening at ground floor level.
  4. A new feature staircase and two fully accessible feature lifts will be introduced to the South-western part of the Site facing St Helen’s Square, creating a new entrance to the cultural spaces relocated from level 10 to levels 2&3, the public garden at level 11 and the London Museum education spaces and viewing gallery at the top of the building.
  5. The restaurant has been moved from level 10 to level 2 to make it more visible and accessible from  St Helen’s Square.
